Ways of Keeping Pain Down Following Dental Grafts

Ways of Keeping Pain Down Following Dental GraftsIf you suffer from gum recession that results in tooth sensitivity and potential tooth loss, you will need dental grafts. It's not as bad as it sounds and can be done in our office.

Gum recession affects millions of people and some don't even realize they have a problem because it happens gradually. If your root is exposed, it can cause intense pain or sensitivity to hot or cold drinks and changes in the weather.

What is a Dental Graft?

Dental grafting is a process in which our surgeon removes gum tissue from another part of the mouth and stitches it to the gum tissue of the exposed tooth. There are three different types of dental grafts.

•  Connective-tissue grafts - a flap of skin is cut in the palate and tissue from under the flap is removed.
•  Free gingival grafts - tissue is removed directly from the roof of the mouth.
•  Pedicle grafts - tissue from surrounding areas are stretched over the exposed tooth.

Managing Pain After Dental Graft Surgery

You will not feel anything during surgery because we will use local or general anesthesia to keep you pain-free and comfortable during the procedure. Our staff will give you specific instructions you must follow to avoid complications and reduce pain following dental graft surgery.

•  Control it at home by placing a gauze around the site (not on top of it),
•  Do not pull your lip to look at the site,
•  Do not remove the dressing,
•  Take pain medications as indicated,
•  Avoid hot drinks and foods for the first couple of days,
•  Do not brush the area for as long as instructed

It is always important to follow all the instructions we give you to make your recovery as easy and pain-free as possible. If you have any concerns during the days after your dental grafts don't hesitate to call us.
