Oral Cancer Comes from Problems Aside from Tobacco UseMost people know that the use of tobacco can lead to cancer. They know that chewing tobacco puts a person at risk for oral cancer.

Not everyone that uses tobacco ends up suffering from some form of oral cancer. It is also true that some people develop oral cancer, even if they have never used any tobacco products. There are other causes of oral cancer for people to know about.

The Risk factors of Tobacco

Tobacco use is one of the biggest risk factors for oral cancer, but only 1 out of every 4 people with oral cancer ever used tobacco. That means there are other risk factors to consider. These include:

•  Alcohol While moderate and social drinking is not a risk factor for oral cancer, excessive drinking is. Just like the chemicals in tobacco, the chemicals in alcohol are dangerous to your oral health.
•  Family History - Like any type of cancer, a family history of any type of cancer puts a person at greater risk for developing oral cancer.
•  Age - The older you get, the higher the risk for oral cancer. Getting older gives your body a chance to get more exposure to some of the things that can lead to oral cancer.
•  HPV - The HPV virus is connected to oral cancer. The recurrence of this virus puts a person at risk.
•  Chronic infections - People that have chronic infections of the mouth are more likely to develop skin cancer.

What to Do
Many people will fall into the risk categories for oral cancer. That makes them wonder what they can do. The best thing a person can do is to follow good oral hygiene practices.

Brushing and flossing every day combined with regular visits to our office is the best defense a person has against oral cancer and other problems. Self-exams are another good idea. The key to dealing with oral cancer is to catch it in its early stages.

Take a moment and schedule an appointment with our office.
