TMJ Treatment

TMJ is short for temporomandibular joint. These are the hinges of your jaws that allow your mouth to move up and down and side to side. When properly aligned, your teeth meet in their optimal bite position, allowing regular functions such as chewing and speaking to occur properly and without discomfort. Normal TMJ function is essential not only for chewing and speaking, but for overall jaw comfort. With TMJ misalignment, you may experience headaches, extreme pain in the jaw, and ear or sinus infections. We can identify and treat these alignment issues so that you don’t suffer from their symptoms. Treatment may include oral appliances or splints, which are created especially for you using advanced equipment that tracks your jaw movements.

While you sleep, the oral appliances, work at realigning your jaw and, over time, they can permanently align your jaw to its optimal position. If a mouthguard or orthodontic treatment (provided by your orthodontist) aren’t effective, we may recommend an arthroscopy. This procedure allows us to diagnose and correct jaw joint issues using minimally invasive surgical techniques. We make a few small incisions in the area, then use a miniature camera to get a closer look. If necessary, we also perform corrective jaw surgery, or orthognathic surgery. While relaxed and under IV sedation, we’ll correct any misalignment by adjusting the size or shape of your jawbones.

Sleep Apnea Treatment

Sleep apnea isn’t just snoring, it’s a chronic condition that causes you to stop breathing multiple times each night. Its effects range from daytime tiredness and difficulty concentrating to serious systemic health problems. Snoring occurs when the soft tissues of your mouth collapse and block your airway. As with TMJ treatment, we can correct obstructive sleep apnea through orthognathic (jaw) surgery. By adjusting the shape of your jawbone or shifting your jaws slightly forward, we can prevent those tissues from interfering with your breathing. You’ll enjoy a healthier, more energetic and productive life as a result.
